All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.” – Havelock Ellis

Recent walk through Central Park

As I was riding the subway today, I was struck with how irritated I had become. Typically, I don't have to take the train at all. I live so close to work that I walk every day. I walk everywhere I need to go. On the rare occasion that I take the train, it's not for long and I usually find something to occupy my time in some way.

Today as I spent an hour going from Manhattan to Brooklyn, I was struck with this concept of "letting go". I was so fiercely holding onto so many emotions--I didn't want to be late meeting my friend, I was annoyed at everyone on the train, the stopping and starting, the delays...as I went over the bridge, I had to remind myself about the letting go I've been trying to do lately. Letting go: of control, of my life, over other people's actions and thoughts.

When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” – Lao Tzu

This has never been an easy idea for me. It's something I struggle with always. However, by letting go of old habits, people, memories and ideas, I open myself up to an entire new realm of possibilities. My heart is open. My mind is slowly (slooooowly) letting go and just trying to be. What do you need to let go of today on this Happy Tuesday?

We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the life that is waiting for us.” – Joseph Campbell

The Tao Te Ching says, When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. When I let go of what I have, I receive what I need. Have you ever struggled to find work or love, only to find them after you have given up? This is the paradox of letting go. Let go, in order to achieve. Letting go is God’s law.” – Mary Manin Morrissey
